Trezor — Start guide (trezor.io/start)

Quick, secure steps to set up your Trezor hardware wallet and protect your crypto.

This guide covers the essential steps to begin using your Trezor device safely. A hardware wallet like Trezor stores your private keys offline so they never touch the internet — a critical layer of protection for cryptocurrencies.

Before you begin

Make sure you received a sealed Trezor box from an authorized reseller. Keep your recovery seed private and write it down on the included card — never store the seed in cloud storage or take photos of it.

1. Unbox & connect

Unwrap the device, connect it to your computer with the supplied cable, and navigate to trezor.io/start. The official site will detect your model and present step-by-step instructions and the latest firmware.

2. Install firmware

If the device requires firmware, follow the prompts on the website and device. Installing official firmware is necessary — do not accept unofficial packages or files from strangers.

3. Create a new wallet

On the device you'll be prompted to create a new wallet. Confirm the generated recovery seed (typically 12–24 words) on paper. This seed is the only backup of your funds — protect it as you would cash or a passport.

4. Set a PIN & optional passphrase

Choose a PIN to prevent unauthorized access to the device. Advanced users may enable a passphrase for an additional hidden wallet — treat the passphrase as a secret separate from the seed.

5. Use with Trezor Suite or web apps

Manage assets with the official Trezor Suite app or compatible wallets. Always verify the website address (trezor.io) and check the device screen when approving transactions.

Remember: Trezor support will never ask for your recovery seed. If anything seems suspicious, disconnect and verify with official documentation at trezor.io.
